The Moji Akinde Social Change Award.
The annual Ankara Ball put together by the Nigerian American Professional Association was an exceptionally proud moment for me. I got to present an award, in my name, to an incredibly worthy recipient, Dr. Abiodun Durojaye, Ed.D CEO of Urban Alliance.
The Moji Akinde Social Change Award was created this year in recognition of the efforts of unique individuals who leverage their platform and resources to effect positive social change and impact in their communities. Dr. Abiodun exemplifies this in her leadership at Urban Alliance and ASIDALove, breaking down barriers and creating work, mentorship and professional development opportunities for Chicago’s youth.
Being able to sponsor and have an award in my name is a privilege and honor I do not take lightly. I am the youngest of seven children born to a mother from a small town called Ìtèlè, so small that most Nigerians don’t even know it exists. My mother with no formal education, took me to night secretarial school with her because she needed to make a better living, and fought HARD to give her children a shot at greatness. To be amongst other phenomenal women doing great things such as Dr. Ngozi Ogbunamiri Ezike Immediate Past Director of Illinois Department of Public Health (and first Black woman to do so) is something I wish my mother could see.
As former Vice President and Advisory Board Member of NAPA, I am beyond honored to reinvest in my community, and continue to use my power and privilege to uplift, advocate and champion the voices of others.
Huge thank you to Grace Azenabor, NAPA President, Chioma Maduko, NAPA Advisor, and all the board members for making this a reality.
